Understanding Our Chronic Pain Treatment

Chronic pain is more than discomfort that lingers, it is a complex condition that persists beyond the expected healing period, often lasting months or years. Unlike acute pain, which signals injury and promotes recovery, chronic pain can continue even after the original tissue damage has healed. For millions of patients, this persistent pain interferes with work, sleep, mobility, and overall quality of life.

At Integrative Sports & Spine, we recognize that chronic pain often involves both structural and neurological factors. The nervous system can become sensitized, amplifying pain signals and creating discomfort in areas beyond the original injury. This central sensitization means that treating tissue damage alone is rarely enough to achieve lasting relief. Our evaluations consider both the physical and neurological contributors to your pain, ensuring that we understand the full picture.

Based on this assessment, we design personalized treatment plans that combine targeted injections, nerve blocks, regenerative therapies, physical rehabilitation, and strategies to calm nervous system hypersensitivity. By addressing the root causes of chronic pain in a coordinated, multi-dimensional approach, our goal is to reduce pain, restore function, and help patients reclaim control over their daily lives safely and effectively.

Benefits of Chronic Pain Treatment

 Interrupts the Chronic Pain Cycle

Our multimodal approach targets the neurological, muscular, and structural mechanisms that perpetuate chronic pain breaking the self-reinforcing cycle rather than simply masking symptoms.

Addresses All Dimensions of Pain

We treat chronic pain holistically, evaluating and managing its physical, neurological, and functional components to provide more complete and lasting relief.

Reduces or Eliminates Dependence on Pain Medication

Targeted interventional treatments control pain effectively without long-term reliance on opioids, NSAIDs, or other systemic medications, minimizing associated risks.

Restores Function, Activity, and Quality of Life

By combining pain control with rehabilitation, our treatments rebuild strength, mobility, and confidence — allowing patients to fully re-engage in work, exercise, and daily life.

Conditions We Treat

Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia produces widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tenderness. Targeted injections for trigger points and nerve-related pain, combined with physical therapy and regenerative techniques, can reduce discomfort and improve function.

Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS)
Patients with persistent pain after spinal surgery often experience a combination of nerve, joint, and soft tissue pain. Epidural steroid injections, facet joint blocks, and regenerative therapies help manage ongoing pain and restore mobility.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
CRPS is a chronic, nerve-related condition causing intense, localized pain, swelling, and changes in skin temperature or color. Interventional injections and nerve-targeted treatments help interrupt abnormal pain signaling and reduce inflammation.

Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain
Long-standing pain in the shoulders, hips, knees, or spine from degenerative changes, overuse, or previous injury responds well to precise injections, regenerative therapies like PRP, and structured rehabilitation programs.

Neuropathic Pain
Pain from nerve injury, compression, or dysfunction including peripheral neuropathy or radiculopathy is treated with nerve blocks, spinal cord modulation, and regenerative interventions to calm overactive nerves and restore function.

Multi-Site or Complex Chronic Pain
Many chronic pain patients experience overlapping sources of discomfort. Our comprehensive approach identifies each contributing structure like joints, muscles, nerves, and soft tissues allowing targeted, coordinated treatments that address the root causes rather than simply masking pain.

What to Expect

Before Your Treatment

Preparation Guidelines• Prepare a comprehensive pain history before your appointment including when your pain began, how it has changed over time, what makes it better or worse, all previous diagnoses and treatments, and how it has affected your daily life and function. The more detail you can provide, the more effectively we can evaluate your situation.
• Bring a complete and current list of all medications including all pain medications, adjuvant treatments, supplements, and any psychological or psychiatric medications.
• Bring all relevant imaging X-rays, MRI scans, CT scans, nerve conduction studies, or any other diagnostic investigations related to your pain condition.
• Bring records of any previous pain management, surgical, or specialist consultations if available.
• Notify your physician of any known allergies, particularly to local anesthetics, corticosteroids, or contrast dye.
• Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that provides access to any regions of the body that are likely to be examined or treated.

Initial Consultation Your first appointment is a comprehensive consultation by one of our physicians. We take the time to truly understand your pain, its history, its character, its triggers, its impact on your life, and everything you have already tried in pursuit of relief. We perform a thorough physical examination that assesses the musculoskeletal, neurological, and functional dimensions of your condition. All existing imaging and prior records are reviewed carefully.

During the Procedure

Comfort and Preparation  • The treatment area is thoroughly cleaned, and a local anesthetic is applied to ensure maximum comfort.
• Your physician will review your pain history and target the specific pain generators identified during your consultation.

Precision Treatment Delivery • Injections such as epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks, facet joint injections, trigger point injections, or PRP therapy are performed using real-time imaging guidance for accurate placement.
• Depending on your condition, one or multiple complementary procedures may be administered during the same session.

After Your Treatment

Immediate Recovery• Most patients return home the same day shortly after their procedure.
• Some degree of post-procedure soreness or temporary symptom fluctuation is normal in the first 24 to 48 hours and typically resolves quickly.
• Apply ice to any treated areas for 15 to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours for comfort.
• Avoid strenuous activity and significant exertion on the day of the procedure.
• Do not drive if sedation or significant nerve block was administered.

Long-Term Recovery
• Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments so your physician can assess your response to each treatment, monitor your overall pain trajectory, and adjust your plan as needed.
• Engage fully with the physical therapy and rehabilitation component of your treatment plan, this is not optional for sustainable results.
• Implement the lifestyle modifications recommended by your physician including sleep hygiene strategies, pacing techniques, stress management approaches, anti-inflammatory dietary principles, and graded activity as these non-procedural components of care contribute significantly to long-term outcomes.
• Maintain open communication with your physician about your progress, any new symptoms, and any changes in your overall health so your care plan can evolve in response to your changing needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes chronic pain different from regular pain?

Chronic pain is not just ongoing tissue pain, the nervous system itself becomes sensitized, generating pain even without new injury. Effective treatment addresses both structural sources and this neurological amplification.

I’ve seen multiple providers without lasting relief. Can ISS help?

Yes. Many patients with long-standing pain respond to our comprehensive, multimodal approach, which evaluates all contributors such as structural, neurological, and muscular and treats them simultaneously for meaningful, sustained relief

How long before I notice improvement?

Some interventions like nerve blocks or trigger point injections provide relief within days. Regenerative treatments, like PRP, work gradually over weeks to months. Full benefits from a complete chronic pain program typically appear within 3–6 months.

Will I ever be completely pain-free?

For some, significant or complete relief is possible. For others, especially with long-standing or complex pain, the goal is meaningful reduction to allow full participation in daily life. Every plan is personalized with realistic expectations.

Can chronic pain treatment be combined with my current therapies?

Yes. Our treatments can complement medications, physical therapy, psychological support, and specialist care. We tailor a plan that enhances what works and addresses what doesn’t.

Is chronic pain treatment covered by insurance?

Coverage depends on your plan. Most major insurers cover medically necessary interventional procedures, including nerve blocks, epidural injections, and physical therapy. Our team reviews benefits and guides you through all anticipated costs before treatment.
